John Locke's Tabula Rasa
Tabula Rasa is Latin for 'clean sheet of paper'
Theory that everyone's mind is born with a blank slate at birth
Idea's are developed from experiences
Two types of experiences
External 'sensation': Interaction with, human beings, everything around us, the color and number of objects and motions
Internal 'reflection': Acts of the mind such as, knowing, believing, remembering, and doubting
Family and teachers need to provide valuable experiences and the optimum environment for the child
Everyone has simple ideas and are gradually developed more in depth by experiences and teachings
Ideas were either
Simple: Idea that is centered around one element
Example: The color red
Complex: Idea that is centered around several simple ideas
Example: An apple. This has the color red, the shape of a circle, and how it feels smooth
We don't have powers of in tuition or that the human mind is invested with innate conceptions
Early Education is important
Practical learning prepares people for their social life, economic life, and political affairs
Reading, writing, and math should all be taught gradual, and cumulative
